From The Driver's Seat
By Peter Viner
Jackie
and I set out from Port Alfred on Sunday 14th October on a long
road trip to Zambia to see our eldest son who is currently living
in Lusaka with his family. We arrived in Lusaka on Monday 22nd
having spent 3 nights in Chobe and 2 nights in Livingstone with a
total journey of 2,900 kilometres. We start the long journey back
home on Monday!
In last month’s Fanmail we mentioned the pre-Christmas Bring and
Braai to be held at our house in November - little did we know at
the time that the date clashed with the Vintage Motor Racing
event to be held in East London so our event will be held on
Sunday 18th November instead. Please make a note in your diaries!
Our monthly supper evening was once again a great success - a
special thank you to Paulette for supporting us in this way! We
really appreciate it.
Bettine Hattingh is making good progress in her recovery from the
stroke she suffered - she has taken her first few steps albeit
with the aid of a walker and we all wish her continued progress.
Dave MacNeil is also making good progress in his recovery from
major open heart surgery - we all wish you well Dave!

Historic Grand Prix
Festival
25th November
2018 to 2nd December 2018.
This event will kick-off with 30’s era Grand Prix cars racing at
the East London GP Circuit on Sunday 25th November and end off
with a Garden Party with display & demo at the Val de Vie
Estate in Franschoek.
Over twenty cars will be present including Rileys, Bugattis, Alfa
Romeo Tipo BP3, Aston Martin Ulster, and MGs, including the very
car driven by Dick Seaman in the 1934 event. Of particular
interest to us is a Riley driven in the 1930's by Buller Meyer,
grandfather of Colin Meyer who will drive it at this event.
Colin, although not a member of our club, is well known to us as
the frequent winner of our OD Inggs event.
Tickets to the East London event ar priced at R250-00. Details
are available on sahistoricgp.com.
Pictured below is the Riley with Colin's grandfather at the
wheel.

Tailpipe
Given the
excessive number of years that most of us have logged, the
following will strike a chord.
As a senior citizen
was driving down the freeway, his cellphone rang. Answering, he
heard his wife's voice urgently warning him, "Herman, I just
heard on the news that there's a car going the wrong way on the
N2 highway. Please be careful!"
"Hell," said Herman, "It's not just one car. It's
hundreds of them!"
