From The Driver's
Seat
By Joe
Janssens
Yes 2017 is something of the past and we are well into January
2018. I trust that you all had a great festive season.
We started the year with our 14th
Club Anniversary Lunch which was once again kindly hosted by
Maggie and Rob Mears. It was very well attended and most
enjoyable.
Arrangements for various events for this year
have started. We are endeavouring to keep all the events
interesting.
Thank you to Daphne and Pam for their
interesting talk for Beginner Navigators.
Sadly Sigrid Drews passed away on the
1st January.
Cheers
Joe

Club Anniversary
Brunch - Saturday 13 January
by Ron Gush.
Pictures by Rob Wallis
47 members and guests pitched up for the 14th annual brunch
hosted by Rob and Maggie Mears at their home in Bathurst. It
was a peachy day for an outing in the old cars.
It was a "bring your own drinks" event and the food
was outstanding and plentiful.
Joe welcomed everyone and ran through a list of the club
highlights during the past year:
1) The clubhouse moved from the late Don and Pat Lee's home to
our new premises in the Museum at Hawkins Industrial Park
2) The OD Inggs Memorial Run was well supported with 25 entries
3) Name badges were procured for club members and spouses
4) Club shirts were sourced and samples acquired for members to
order
In memory: Eden Bradfield and Sigrid Drews passed away and were
sadly remembered as stalwart members.
Daphne McNeill thanked the committee for all of their hard work
during the past year.
Joe thanked all members who had helped in the running of the
club over the past year. In particular he thanked Rob and
Maggie for hosting this brunch and for those who organised the
event and contributed food.

Three little boys were comparing how far back
they could remember.
One said he could remember being in nappies at age 2.
The second said he could remember cutting his first tooth
before he was one.
The third said he could remember going on a picnic with his
father and coming home with his mother.

Knight Sleeve Valve
Engine
by Ron Gush
My brother-in-law, Philip (who has participated in an OD Inggs
rally and is thus known to some of you), told me about a car
running around in Cape Town fitted with this type of engine. I
was intrigued. My late father once mentioned how quiet these
engines were. Philip gave me a photocopy of the cutaway engine
but it was difficult to follow the sequence of it's 2
concentric mobile sleeves cranked by a "cam" shaft.
The piston runs in the inner mobile sleeve....
So I googled and found this picture. Also very confusing:
|
|
|
So I googled some more and found this animation
of the engine: Click here to watch
the working demo model.
There is a cutaway model of this engine in the Crankhandle
Clubhouse, that you can crank and view it's operation.
Fascinating stuff indeed.

What is it about this picture that makes me think
that I am not driving my Ten to its full potential? Look closely
to see the driver leaning well into the passenger seat - no doubt
mindful that this car has a mere 3 foot 9 inch track. Awesome
picture! Ron

My wife just stopped and said, "You weren't
even listening were you?"
I thought.... "that's a pretty weird way to start a
